INTRODUCTION

The Department is one of the major clinical departments. it consist of several units. It runs Out-patient services as Ante-natal, post-natal , gynaecological and Family planning clinic including outpatient services at the gynaecological emergency unit and the labour room.

Clinical Services

The department provides elective specialist surgical procedures in Obstetrics and Gynecology every Thursday withiin the limit of our resources and expertise.

  • Neonatal services, emergency paediatric services, in-patient paediatric care, preventive paediatric services and counselling services
  • Emergency surgical procedures at any point of time 24/7.
  • Reproductive Health Clinics for Family Planning Services, Cancer Screening Services, etc. every Friday.
  • Booking and antenatal clinics for pregnant women every Thursday and Tuesday respectively.
  • Postnatal clinic for women who have delivered within six weeks every Mondays.
  • Gynaecologic clinic- to see all women of any age with Gynecological problems from 12 noon - every Wednesday.
  • Women with emergency Obstetric and Gynaecological problems are seen at any point of time 24/7 in Labour Ward and Gynae Emergency Unit.
  • Admitted patients in the wards are seen every day on ward round by Senior Residents, Medical Officers and House Officers, and every Wednesday by the Consultants.

Research and Training

The department has in addition to House Officers, and partial accreditation of West Africa College of Surgeons for residency training. In line with this, the department conducts:

  • Daily post call morning reviews except Thursday.
  • Departmental academic presentation every Friday.
  • Grand-ward round for bed-site teaching every Tuesday.
  • Monthly departmental Mortality/Morbidity review for audit.
  • Joint departmental Perinatal/Morbidity and Mortality review with Paediatrics Department.
